Youth Ministry: October News

I hope everyone has settled back into the rhythm of the school year. As we come into October, we mark an important time in church history: the Protestant Reformation. While others recognize October 31 to be Halloween, we recognize it first as Reformation Day. It was on this fateful day in 1517 that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Church and unknowingly set the Reformation in motion.

But what is the Reformation, you may ask. Among the many issues the Reformers had with the teachings and practices of the then Roman Catholic church, we could sum up their position in what was later developed to be five Latin phrases called the Five Solas

  1. Sola Gratia – Grace Alone
  2. Sola Fide – Faith Alone
  3. Solus Christus – In Christ Alone
  4. Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone
  5. Soli Deo Gloria – Glory to God Alone

That is, we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to the Scriptures alone, to the glory of God alone. Today, we continue to hold to this truth. If you don’t know much about the Reformation, I encourage you to take some time to learn more about it this month. Check out this movie on the life of Martin Luther on YouTube, make it a family event!

So this year, if you hand out candy to trick-or-treaters or if you go house-to-house yourself, be sure to wish people a “Happy Reformation Day” instead of the old “trick or treat”. And when they look at you in confusion, you can begin to tell them this story that began in 1517… this is what I’ll be doing!
